As the world shifts towards more sustainable practices, the Jollibee Group has taken a significant leap forward. The company recently energized 6,300 solar panels in its Canlubang Baking Facility (CBF), marking its most extensive solar panel installation to date. This game-changing initiative forms part of the company's commitment to sustainable business practices, as outlined in its global sustainability agenda, Joy for Tomorrow.
Through Zenith Foods Corporation (ZFC), its subsidiary, the Jollibee Group forged a collaboration with First Gen Corporation. The partnership aimed to power one-third of the Jollibee Group's manufacturing facility with solar electricity, a significant stride towards carbon neutrality.
In January 2024, officials from both companies, accompanied by Calamba City Mayor Roseller Rizal, led the switch-on ceremony in Canlubang, Laguna. The event underscored Jollibee Group's drive to lessen the environmental impact of its supply chain operations, as highlighted by Supply Chain Head, Michael Ong.
Mayor Rizal commended the project, highlighting its crucial role in achieving the city's sustainability goals. The initiative sends a strong message to the business community about the importance of orderly operations that consider multiple factors, including environmental concerns.
The Canlubang Baking Facility is only the second of four target sites for solar panel installation. Zen3, also in Canlubang, was the first to have 3,000 solar panels installed in November 2023. The remaining sites are expected to be solar-powered by the third quarter of 2024.
The solar panels support the Jollibee Group's portfolio of brands in the Philippines, including Jollibee, Greenwich, Burger King, Red Ribbon, Chowking, and Mang Inasal. The ambitious project is set to impact multiple areas of the business, from commissaries to logistics centers.
First Gen constructed four rooftop solar power plants for ZFC's facilities, a testament to the shared vision of a cleaner and greener future between the two companies. First Gen’s Vice President for Power Marketing, Trading, and Economics, Carlo Vega, expressed gratitude for the trust bestowed on them by Jollibee Group's ZFC.
From the established 2020 baseline data, the Jollibee Group's manufacturing sites across the country have made significant strides in sustainability, reducing waste by 38% as of 2022. Additionally, the manufacturing facilities have decreased their water use ratio by 23% and their energy use ratio by 21.5%.
The Jollibee Group has identified three critical areas that impact the planet: energy, water, and waste. With this newfound awareness, the company is embracing the challenge of 'Joy for Tomorrow', establishing strategies, systems, and initiatives that will allow for responsible treatment of our planet, according to Jose Miñana Jr., Jollibee Group’s Chief Sustainability and Public Affairs Officer.
The Jollibee Group's largest solar panel installation to date is more than just a step towards renewable energy; it's a leap towards a brighter, greener future. As the company continues to integrate solar energy into its operations, it sends a powerful message of commitment to sustainability, not just for today's generation, but for the generations to come.
