In the heart of the Philippine archipelago, Davao City witnessed a historic moment with the inauguration of the Davao City Bulk Water Supply Project (DCBWSP). This monumental infrastructure project, the largest of its kind in the country, demonstrates the power of partnership and the promise of progress. It's a beacon of hope for over one million Davaoeños, marking a significant stride towards a future of reliable, sustainable water supply.
The inauguration drew a prestigious crowd, including President Ferdinand “Bongbong” Marcos, Jr. After a grand tour and unveiling of the ceremonial plaque, the President emphasized the urgency of addressing the country's water situation. His words echoed through the chambers of the newly inaugurated facility, marking the beginning of a new chapter in the country's history.
The success of the DCBWSP is a testament to the fruitful partnership between the Davao City Water District (DCWD) and Apo Agua Infrastructura, Inc. (Apo Agua). Together, they've crafted a solution that not only addresses Davao's water needs but also sets a precedent for future infrastructure projects across the country.
Apo Agua's role doesn't end with the production of water. The organization also oversees the distribution of this precious resource to DCWD’s Water Supply Systems in various parts of Davao City. This intricate web of water supply marks a significant development in the city's water infrastructure.
A unique feature of the DCBWSP is the utilization of the Tamugan River. This innovative approach, coupled with the water-energy nexus system, allows the facility to generate its own power and contribute surplus energy to the grid - a first in Southeast Asia.
The success of the DCBWSP is a shining example of what can be achieved through public-private partnerships. Aboitiz Group President and CEO Sabin M. Aboitiz emphasised the importance of such collaborations for future infrastructure development.
DCWD Chairman Eduardo A. Bangayan recounted the project's history, rooted in the necessity to support Davao City's dynamic growth. The journey began in 1993 and culminated with the completion of the DCBWSP, a true testament to the city's commitment towards a sustainable future.
This ambitious project was supported by former President Mayor Rodrigo Duterte who, along with subsequent Mayors Sara Duterte and Sebastian Duterte, shared this vision for a prosperous Davao City.
The DCBWSP has been operational since December 1, 2023, and has since transformed the lives of Davaoeños, particularly in the second district, by ensuring a consistent and reliable water supply.
The Davao City Bulk Water Supply Project is more than just a water facility - it's a beacon of progress, a testament to the power of partnership, and a model for future endeavors. It's a symbol of how infrastructure can transform a city and improve lives. It's the dawn of a new era for Davao City and the Philippines.
