In the heart of the Philippines, a remarkable story is being written, one that will change the face of Calbayog City, Samar forever. The much-anticipated bridge project that will connect two vibrant barangays is set to begin construction this year. This project, made possible by the generous funding approved under the 2024 General Appropriations Act (GAA) of the Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH), is a testament to the power of visionary urban planning.
In a recent report by Region 8 Director Edgar B. Tabacon, it's been revealed that an impressive amount of P150 million has been allocated this year for the four-lane bridge component of the ongoing Calbayog City Coastal Road Project. This project is set to seamlessly connect Barangay San Policarpo to Barangay Rawis, a milestone that will forever change the face of Calbayog City.
This is no ordinary bridge. With a total span of 90 meters, it's designed to be a weathered steel bridge capable of withstanding degradation caused by pollutants brought by air, rain, dew, and humidity. This is a bridge built not just for today but for many generations to come.
"With its aesthetically pleasing steel arch, this bridge has the potential to become an iconic landmark in Calbayog City," said Director Tabacon. More than just a bridge, this project is set to become a symbol of progress, a beacon of hope, and a testament to the resilience of the people of Samar.
Commenced in 2018, the entire Calbayog City Coastal Road Project is envisioned as an alternative 4.67-kilometer bypass road that will eventually connect Barangay San Policarpo to Barangay Rawis. This is a significant reduction in travel time, cutting the usual 30-minute travel to just 10 minutes.
Despite the challenges of the past, the DPWH has so far completed the construction of 3.79 kilometers of the road project. Recently completed is its Package C segment covering road widening of 432.7 meters section with 141 solar light posts and 588 solar pavement studs.
"This project is aimed at decongesting the commercial district of Calbayog City by diverting the traffic from Daang Maharlika to the bypass road, making room for more motorists while steering clear from the challenges brought by road right-of-way acquisition," said Director Tabacon.
Upon targeted completion in 2025, the Calbayog City Coastal Road is expected to lessen road accidents, boost commercial and tourist activities, and improve connectivity between the surrounding areas. This is a project that promises to bring about a new era of economic development and social progress in Calbayog City.
The Calbayog City Coastal Road Project is more than just about building a bridge. It's about bridging the gap between communities, making travel easier, and fostering economic growth. It's about creating a better Samar for everyone.
As we look forward to the commencement of this bridge project, let us celebrate the vision, hard work, and commitment that has brought us to this point. The journey ahead may be challenging, but with the unwavering support and dedication of all stakeholders, the future of Calbayog City, Samar looks brighter than ever.
