SUEZ and Maynilad's Groundbreaking Mission to Revitalize Manila Bay

In a significant stride towards environmental preservation and enhancing the quality of life for the residents, SUEZ has inked a pivotal contract with Maynilad, the Philippines' leading private water concessionaire. This partnership marks the commencement of an ambitious journey to revitalize the troubled waters of Manila Bay, an initiative that promises to reshape the environmental landscape of the region. For years, Manila Bay has stood as a testament to the severe consequences of unchecked pollution, its waters tainted by the relentless discharge of untreated sewage. The establishment of the Central Manila Sewerage System (CMSS) Water Reclamation Facility by SUEZ aims to reverse these damages, offering a beacon of hope for the bay's ecological restoration.

Positioned strategically in Manila's port area, the CMSS project is not merely an infrastructural feat; it's a lifeline for the surrounding ecosystems and communities. Boasting a capacity to treat 180 million litres of wastewater per day, the facility is a testament to SUEZ's commitment to adhere to, and even surpass, the stringent effluent regulations set by the Philippines' Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR). By doing so, the project extends its impact beyond Manila Bay, promising to improve the quality of water in Laguna Lake, thereby securing a safer source of drinking water for millions.

At the heart of the CMSS project lies SUEZ's innovative Cyclor Turbo technology, a game-changer in the realm of wastewater treatment. This technology not only enables the efficient operation of the facility within the constraints of limited space but also minimizes the environmental footprint through reduced power consumption. The rehabilitation of the Tondo Sewage Pumping Plant and the construction of a new conveyance system underscore the comprehensive approach undertaken to ensure the project's success. Set to launch in January 2024, with full commissioning in 2027, the CMSS project is poised to transform the lives of approximately 1 million residents across a 2,820-hectare area.

The synergy between SUEZ and Maynilad underlines a shared vision for a sustainable future, one where clean waterways and healthy communities are not just aspirations but realities. Ramoncito Fernandez, President and CEO of Maynilad, and Sabrina Soussan, Chairman and CEO of SUEZ, have both expressed their commitment to this monumental endeavor, recognizing its potential to catalyze ecological transformation and enhance the livelihoods of countless individuals.

The collaboration between SUEZ and Maynilad is not just a testament to their individual commitments to environmental preservation but also a reflection of their profound impact on the global stage. With SUEZ's legacy of innovation and Maynilad's extensive reach, this partnership is a powerful force for positive change. As we look forward to the fruits of this collaboration, it's clear that the revitalization of Manila Bay is just the beginning. Through their united efforts, SUEZ and Maynilad are setting new standards for environmental stewardship, ensuring a cleaner, healthier future for generations to come.

This transformative project not only highlights the critical importance of sustainable water management but also showcases the power of collaboration in tackling environmental challenges. As Manila Bay prepares to witness a remarkable turnaround, the global community watches eagerly, recognizing this endeavor as a blueprint for future environmental restoration projects worldwide.
