On May 3, 2024, the bustling streets of Tondo district in the City of Manila became the epicenter of a significant law enforcement operation. National Bureau of Investigation (NBI) operatives, armed with search warrants, successfully conducted multiple raids, unearthing counterfeit ink products worth Ph₱2.5 million (approximately US$44,000). This monumental event marks the largest seizure of Epson counterfeit ink since 2022.
During the meticulously planned operation, the NBI seized over 8,000 pieces of counterfeit ink products, 4,000 pieces of counterfeit packaging boxes, and 6,300 hologram labels. These raids targeted two ink suppliers whose activities were not confined to physical premises but extended to the digital realm, including social media and e-commerce platforms. Investigations revealed that these counterfeit products were likely sourced from unauthorized and dubious suppliers overseas.
The discovery of counterfeit hologram labels in large quantities was particularly alarming. These labels, designed to deceive and confuse consumers, were affixed to the counterfeit products to give them the appearance of legitimacy. The presence of product carton boxes at the raided premises suggested that the packaging and assembly of these counterfeit items were conducted on-site, further complicating the web of deception.
The staggering volume of fake hologram labels underscores the extent of the fraud perpetrated against unsuspecting consumers. Many customers, believing they were purchasing genuine Epson products, were unwittingly buying counterfeit items. This not only undermines consumer trust but also poses significant risks to their health and safety.
Epson Southeast Asia Regional Headquarters has been unwavering in its support of law enforcement efforts to eradicate counterfeit ink sales. Over the past three years, Epson has proactively collaborated with the NBI to combat the proliferation of fake products. Earlier this year, the NBI seized approximately 5,000 pieces of counterfeit ink products valued at Ph₱1.7 million (approximately US$30,400). In 2023, a raid in the Quiapo district yielded 7,292 counterfeit Epson printer ink bottles worth Ph₱2.0 million (approximately US$35,700). Likewise, in September 2022, a Tarlac-based trading company specializing in office and school supplies was raided, resulting in the seizure of 867 counterfeit Epson ink products.
"Epson appreciates the efforts of NBI in taking strong action against these counterfeit traders to safeguard the rights of consumers and honest businesses," remarked an Epson Southeast Asia spokesperson. Counterfeit ink formulations often contain harmful substances such as heavy metals, solvents, and toxic chemicals. The use of these counterfeit inks can emit hazardous fumes, posing significant health risks to individuals in the vicinity. Therefore, rigorous actions are essential to protect the community.
Epson encourages customers to purchase genuine ink products from authorized dealers and official online stores. To enhance security and ensure peace of mind, Epson has introduced the Epson Genuine Ink PH app, available on Google Play and the App Store. This app allows users to verify the authenticity of their ink products by scanning the QR code or inputting the Random Number (RN) found on the upper hologram sticker of the ink box. The app then confirms whether the QR code or RN is registered as genuine.
The introduction of this app is a testament to Epson’s commitment to protecting its customers from counterfeit products. By empowering consumers with the tools to verify product authenticity, Epson aims to restore trust and confidence in its brand.
