Growing Green: How Aboitiz InfraCapital's West Cebu Estate is Leading the Charge in Environmental Sustainability

In celebration of Philippine Arbor Day last July 25, Aboitiz InfraCapital Economic Estates’ West Cebu Estate (WCE) team, along with various partners, planted over 2,500 seedlings in Balamban, Cebu. This event marked a significant milestone in the team’s ongoing commitment to environmental sustainability. Imagine that—over 2,500 little green warriors, ready to grow and protect our planet!

Cyel Auza, Aboitiz InfraCapital Economic Estates Vice President for Cebu Operations, couldn't have said it better: "Aboitiz InfraCapital’s business units are committed to creating a greener, healthier future in the communities we operate in. This tree planting activity, which we have been doing for the past 16 years, is a testament to what we can achieve when we work together toward a common goal." Talk about team spirit!

Since March 2008, WCE has shown unwavering dedication to reforestation, having planted over 100,000 trees. This effort not only strengthens their legacy but also fosters community collaboration and environmental stewardship. It's like a tree-hugger's dream come true!

This year's tree-planting activity was a massive collective effort. It brought together 333 team member (TM) volunteers, including TMs from MEZ2 Estate and Unity Digital Infrastructure, Inc., the digital infrastructure arm of Aboitiz InfraCapital. If that doesn't scream teamwork, I don't know what does!

MEZ2 Estate, the pioneering industrial park in Visayas, is home to The Outlets at Pueblo Verde, Visayas-Mindanao’s first authentic outlet mall destination. At the same time, Unity operates telecommunication towers nationwide, including several in Cebu, where Unity established one of its pilot sites in 2021. Talk about a diverse team of volunteers!

Other volunteers included Aboitiz Construction, Inc. and Balamban EnerZone Corporation TMs; WCE locators, contractors, and service providers; and volunteers from the University of San Jose-Recoletos, Philippine National Police, and other stakeholders. This collective effort led by WCE highlights the importance of collaboration in addressing environmental challenges and promoting sustainable development. Teamwork really does make the dream work!

The seedlings were planted in Buhingtubig, Barangay Buanoy, in Balamban, Cebu. Barangay Buanoy is an urban and coastal barangay with a total area of 1,050 hectares, mostly agricultural land. This means that the newly planted trees will have plenty of space to grow and flourish, making a significant impact on the environment.

Barangay Buanoy is host to WCE, whose 540-hectare mixed-use Economic Estate has transformed Balamban, Cebu, into the Shipbuilding Capital of the Philippines. This transformation is a testament to the power of sustainable development and the positive impact it can have on a community.

Hosting 12 locators from medium to heavy industries and employing 14,000 skilled workers, WCE is complemented by residential, commercial, and institutional components. Its ongoing 39-hectare industrial expansion and the upcoming development of a 3.3-hectare central business district are set to attract many industries. These expansion areas are expected to create 14,000 new jobs, stimulating new opportunities in commercial centers, housing, transportation, and more. It's like planting seeds of change, one tree at a time!

As we look to the future, it's clear that Aboitiz InfraCapital and its West Cebu Estate team are committed to continuing their efforts in environmental sustainability. The tree planting activities are just one example of how they are making a positive impact on the environment and the communities they serve.

By fostering collaboration and community involvement, WCE is setting a shining example for other organizations to follow. It's about more than just planting trees; it's about creating a greener, healthier future for everyone. And with over 100,000 trees planted since 2008, it's safe to say that WCE is well on its way to achieving that goal.

In conclusion, the recent tree planting activity in celebration of Philippine Arbor Day is a testament to what can be achieved when we work together toward a common goal. With the continued efforts of Aboitiz InfraCapital and its partners, the future looks bright—and green! So, here's to a greener tomorrow, one tree at a time!
