Splashing into the Future: The Game-Changing Upper Wawa Dam Project

COURTESY: Department of Finance

Hey there, water warriors! Today, we’re diving into something really exciting and refreshing, especially for our friends in Metro Manila and Rizal. And no, it’s not a new resort or an epic waterpark (though that would be cool, right?). We’re talking about the massive Upper Wawa Dam project, which is set to become the biggest water source project in the Philippines in over 50 years. Buckle up, because we’re about to make a big splash!

So, picture this: On July 10, 2024, Finance Secretary Ralph G. Recto and President Ferdinand R. Marcos, Jr. were seen together at the site visit and impounding process ceremony of the Public-Private Partnership (PPP)-led Upper Wawa Dam project. It was a momentous day, not just for them but for millions of Filipinos who will benefit from this project.

The Upper Wawa Dam is the second phase of the Wawa Bulk Water Supply Project. It’s not just any ordinary dam; it’s an 85-meter roller-compacted concrete behemoth that will deliver a whopping 438 million liters of water per day once it’s operational by the end of 2025. That’s right, folks, sustainable and clean water for about 2.2 million to 3.5 million Filipinos in greater Metro Manila and Rizal is on the horizon!

Before we dive deeper, let’s rewind a bit. The first phase of this mega project, the Tayabasan Weir dam, was already completed back in October 2022. Standing at 25 meters high, it’s already delivering an initial 80 million liters of water per day. Talk about a head start!

But the Upper Wawa Dam is where the real magic happens. Once it’s up and running, the entire Wawa Bulk Water Supply Project will ramp up the water supply service to a mind-blowing 710 million liters per day in the years to come. Now that’s what I call a game-changer!

You might be wondering, who’s behind this water wonder? Well, it’s none other than Prime Infrastructure Capital, Inc. and San Lorenzo Ruiz Builders and Developers Group. These two powerhouses have joined forces through their joint venture—Wawa JVCo, Inc.—to make this dream a reality.

Their mission? To align with the Marcos, Jr. administration’s goal of providing universal access to safe, affordable, and sustainable water supply for all Filipinos. Plus, they’re also focusing on strengthening the country’s climate resilience. Yep, they’re not just thinking about today but also planning for a better tomorrow.

So, what does this mean for us, the everyday folks? Well, imagine turning on your tap and never worrying about water shortages again. That’s the kind of impact the Upper Wawa Dam will have. With a steady and sustainable water supply, millions of Filipinos in Metro Manila and Rizal can finally say goodbye to those dreaded water interruptions.

Moreover, this project is a testament to what can be achieved through effective public-private partnerships. It’s not just about building infrastructure; it’s about building a future where clean water is a given, not a luxury. And that, my friends, is a future worth looking forward to.

As we wrap up this water adventure, let’s take a moment to appreciate the sheer scale and significance of the Upper Wawa Dam project. It’s not just a structure; it’s a symbol of progress, resilience, and hope for millions of Filipinos. And with leaders like Finance Secretary Ralph G. Recto and President Ferdinand R. Marcos, Jr. championing such initiatives, we’re in good hands.

So, here’s to making waves, one liter at a time! Cheers to a future where every Filipino has access to safe, affordable, and sustainable water. Stay tuned, because the best is yet to come!
