Recently, they've secured a game-changing contract to construct a 32-meter catamaran for Rottnest Fast Ferries. This milestone is happening as they celebrate their 12th year at the dynamic West Cebu Estate (WCE). So, grab your life vests, and let's set sail on this journey to explore how Austal and WCE are making waves in the maritime world!
Austal Philippines is no stranger to the spotlight. With a reputation for excellence in shipbuilding, they've been delivering top-notch vessels to satisfied clients across the globe. This latest contract to build a 32-meter catamaran is another feather in their cap. Designed by the renowned Australian firm Incat Crowther, this advanced aluminum vessel will be built in Austal's world-class shipyard at WCE.
What sets this catamaran apart? It’s designed to accommodate 400 passengers, a five-member crew, and boasts ample cargo space for bicycles and baggage. Powered by two powerful 1029kW MAN D2862 diesel engines, it promises speeds of up to 25 knots. Talk about a smooth, efficient journey across the waves!
As Austal Philippines marks 12 successful years at West Cebu Estate, it’s evident that their journey is just beginning. Over the years, they've delivered 21 vessels to 12 clients in 11 countries. This impressive track record underscores their stature in the global shipbuilding industry. But they’re not stopping there! In 2022, Austal expanded into drydocking and ship repair services, adding even more value to their offerings and reinforcing WCE's role as a leading hub for advanced maritime operations.
Now, let's shift our focus to the vibrant ecosystem that is West Cebu Estate. Established in 1992, WCE has become a cornerstone of Cebu’s industrial and economic landscape. It hosts 12 key locators from medium to heavy industries, including globally recognized shipbuilders like Tsuneishi Heavy Industries of Japan and Advanced Catamaran Composites of the USA. This bustling estate has directly generated over 14,000 jobs and attracted investments exceeding ₱32 billion.
WCE's robust industrial ecosystem offers businesses like Austal everything they need for sustained success. From reliable power and water to seamless telecommunications and construction services, it’s all integrated to support high-level production demands. The estate also boasts a skilled local workforce, ensuring a steady supply of talent to meet operational needs. Plus, with a dedicated seaport, logistics are optimized for efficient goods movement. Regulatory services, including a one-stop-shop for PEZA and Bureau of Customs support, streamline processes for all locators.
Responding to increasing industrial demand, WCE has embarked on an ambitious 39-hectare expansion, backed by an initial investment of PHP1.4 billion. This expansion will cater to light to medium manufacturing industries, including automotive, semiconductor, and electronics. It's a strategic move to diversify WCE's locator base and generate an additional 14,000 jobs.
With four new locators already confirmed, the expansion underscores WCE’s commitment to supporting Cebu’s economic growth while meeting the evolving needs of global industries. But it’s not just about business; WCE is also focused on community development. In 2025, they'll break ground on a new commercial complex featuring a neighborhood mall, transport terminal, communal park, and commercial lots. These amenities are designed to enhance the quality of life for the estate’s workforce and residents, creating a supportive, well-rounded environment.
As WCE’s industrial footprint grows, so does its commitment to being a leader in industrial growth. With strategic expansion, comprehensive infrastructure, and a strong focus on community, WCE is positioning itself as the premier industrial hub in the region. This vision is not just about business success; it’s about driving sustainable growth for Cebu and beyond.
