Rising from the Ashes: How Sercomm Philippines is Leading Community Reconstruction Efforts in Calamba

When Typhoon Carina lashed out at the Philippines, its wrath was devastating, particularly for those in Barangay Lingga in Calamba, near the Sercomm Philippines Inc. (SPI) factory. The torrents of rain and fierce winds left the vicinity of Laguna de Bay flooded, forcing many families to evacuate their homes. Just when the community began to grasp the extent of the typhoon’s impact, another calamity struck. In June 2024, a devastating fire razed 30 houses in Barangay Lingga, leaving more families homeless and in dire need of support.

In these trying times, the heartwarming response from Sercomm Philippines has been nothing short of extraordinary. Starting in July 2024, SPI, in collaboration with the Philippines Trade and Investment Center (PTIC) Taipei, embarked on a mission to bring relief and hope to those affected. With the support of local barangay authorities, they initiated comprehensive outreach programs that included the distribution of essential relief supplies such as rice, noodles, canned goods, toiletries, and drinking water.

The commitment of Sercomm Philippines to the welfare of the Calamba community extends beyond mere relief supplies. Understanding that recovery is a multifaceted process, SPI has also coordinated closely with the Philippine Red Cross - Laguna Provincial Chapter. Their collaboration aims to roll out a second wave of outreach activities, ensuring that aid reaches other affected areas nearby.

"Being an integral member of the community, Sercomm is committed to fulfilling our corporate social responsibility," stated Jack Yueh, President of Sercomm Philippines. This statement underscores the company’s dedication not just to business success, but to the well-being of the community it operates in. By providing timely assistance, Sercomm hopes to help the community return to normalcy as swiftly as possible.

The significance of such efforts cannot be overstated. Natural disasters, while beyond our control, demand a collective response from all sectors of society. Mr. Anthony B. Rivera, Trade Representative and Director for Commercial Affairs of PTIC Taipei, echoed this sentiment, highlighting the pivotal role of industry leaders like Sercomm in disaster relief.

While immediate relief is critical, Sercomm Philippines is also looking towards the future. Recognizing the long-term impact of disasters on education, SPI is extending its outreach efforts to include educational sponsorship for disadvantaged children in Barangay Lingga. This initiative aims to ensure that the calamities do not disrupt the educational journey of young students, who are the future of the community.

Through this sponsorship, Sercomm is providing school supplies, uniforms, and even scholarships to those in need. Education is a powerful tool for change, and by investing in it, SPI is not only aiding in the community's immediate recovery but also laying the foundation for a brighter future.

The smiles on the faces of children receiving their new school supplies are a testament to the far-reaching impact of Sercomm’s efforts. These children, who have experienced so much upheaval, now have a renewed sense of hope and normalcy, thanks to the unwavering support from SPI.

Another pivotal aspect of Sercomm’s community reconstruction efforts is the voluntary community cleanup work. The aftermath of Typhoon Carina and the subsequent fire left Barangay Lingga in disarray. The physical and emotional toll on the residents was immense. Understanding the importance of a clean and orderly environment in restoring a sense of dignity and normalcy, SPI employees have been actively participating in cleanup drives.

These cleanup activities involve clearing debris, repairing damaged infrastructure, and restoring public spaces. The sight of SPI employees working hand-in-hand with local residents is a powerful image of solidarity and community spirit. It reflects the core values of Sercomm Philippines and its commitment to being a responsible and caring corporate citizen.

In conclusion, the efforts of Sercomm Philippines in Calamba go beyond corporate social responsibility; they embody the essence of community and resilience. Through relief supplies, educational sponsorship, and voluntary cleanup work, SPI is not just rebuilding Barangay Lingga but also restoring hope and dignity to its residents. As the community rises from the ashes of Typhoon Carina and the devastating fire, it does so with the unwavering support and compassion of Sercomm Philippines.
