Soaring to New Heights: The Exciting Expansion of FedEx at Clark International Airport

https://www.jgsummit.com.ph

As I walked through the bustling halls of Clark International Airport recently, I couldn't help but feel a sense of excitement in the air. The energy was palpable, and it wasn’t just because of the usual airport hustle and bustle. No, this was something different. News had spread that the Federal Express Corporation, one of the world’s largest express transportation companies, had signed a groundbreaking agreement with Luzon International Premiere Airport Development Corporation (LIPAD). This agreement marks a significant upgrade and expansion of FedEx’s gateway in Clark, Pampanga.

This move is set to elevate the capabilities of Clark International Airport and bring about a new era of international connectivity for local businesses. The expansion is a promising sign of the times, reflecting the growing demand for e-commerce, freight, and cold-chain shipments across the Asia Pacific region.

Let’s talk about the new FedEx facility. Upon its completion, it will be more than double the size of its current setup. Imagine the kind of impact that will have! This expansion will offer enhanced support for both importers and exporters, from small-and-medium enterprises (SMEs) to heavy-weight freight shippers. Local businesses will now have greater and more reliable access to international markets, which is a game-changer for many.

Recently, I had the privilege of attending the signing ceremony at the FedEx Gateway. The presence of key figures like Joshua Bingcang, President and CEO of the Bases Conversion and Development Authority (BCDA), Arrey Perez, President of Clark International Airport Corporation (CIAC), and Noelle Meneses, Vice President for Business Development and Business Enhancement of Clark Development Corporation (CDC), signaled the importance of this venture. Their support is a testament to the positive ripple effect this expansion will have on the region.

One of the most exciting aspects of this expansion is the economic benefits it promises to bring to the northern Luzon region. By transforming Clark International Airport into a premier global civil aviation logistics hub, the project aligns with the vision of BCDA, CDC, and LIPAD. The establishment of additional facilities, such as aprons and taxiways, will significantly enhance FedEx operations, enabling better handling of cargo and fostering growth in the logistics sector.

This development is more than just an infrastructure upgrade; it’s an economic stimulus. The expansion is expected to create job opportunities for the local community, providing a much-needed boost in these challenging times. It’s heartening to see how a single initiative can have such a wide-reaching impact, from improving global trade connectivity to uplifting local economies.

Listening to Maribeth Espinosa, managing director of FedEx Philippines, speak at the ceremony was truly inspiring. “We are pleased to sign this agreement that symbolizes our intent to kick-start the expansion of our gateway at Clark,” she said. Since their establishment in the Philippines in 1984, FedEx has remained committed to enhancing their network and service offerings. This expansion is a testament to their dedication to facilitating cross-border trade and optimizing the country’s supply chain capabilities.

Noel Manankil, President and CEO of LIPAD, echoed this sentiment. “This landmark agreement embodies our unwavering commitment to fostering sustainable development and economic vitality in the region,” he said. The collaboration between FedEx Philippines and LIPAD is indeed a beacon of hope and progress, ensuring a brighter future for the entire community.

It’s incredible to think that this journey began in October 2021 when FedEx first unveiled its gateway in Clark. Equipped with state-of-the-art technology, the 17,000-square-meter facility can sort up to 9,000 parcels per hour, enabling FedEx to provide customers with reliable service more efficiently. The dedicated freight-handling area spans 630 square meters, a clear indication of the scale and ambition behind this project.

LIPAD, a special purpose company created to oversee the operations and maintenance of Clark International Airport, has been instrumental in this endeavor. Backed by shareholders like Filinvest Development Corporation, JG Summit Holdings Inc., Philippine Airport Ground Support Solutions Inc., and Changi Airports Philippines Pte. Ltd., LIPAD has successfully navigated the complexities of public-private partnerships to bring this project to fruition. By investing in Clark Airport, JG Summit aims to bolster the infrastructure capacity of Northern and Central Luzon, fostering sustainable and inclusive economic growth.

As I reflect on the journey ahead, it’s clear that the expansion of FedEx at Clark International Airport is more than just a business venture. It’s a visionary project that embodies a commitment to progress, innovation, and community development. The benefits of this expansion will resonate far and wide, supporting local businesses, creating job opportunities, and enhancing global trade connectivity.

So, the next time you find yourself at Clark International Airport, take a moment to appreciate the strides being made. It’s an exciting time for the region, and I, for one, am thrilled to witness this journey unfold. Here’s to soaring to new heights and embracing a future filled with endless possibilities!

En Route to a Brighter Future: UPS's Latest Asia Pacific Expansion"

Global logistics leader UPS (NYSE: UPS) has taken a significant leap forward with a further investment commitment in Asia Pacific exceeding $250m since the start of 2023. This notable push includes the recent agreement with The Luzon International Premiere Airport Development Corporation (LIPAD) that is set to extend UPS's operations at Clark Airport (CRK) in the Philippines.

This vital move will empower UPS to strengthen its robust portfolio of integrated express, supply chain and healthcare logistics services. Wilfredo Ramos, president UPS Asia Pacific, acknowledges the Asia Pacific as one of UPS's fastest-growing regions, attributing the continual investment in their network to their goal of maximizing speed and flexibility.

Ramos also highlights the company's efforts to build solutions addressing the shift of global trade lanes and offer resilience for their customers. The collaboration with LIPAD is the latest in a series of network and facility enhancements that UPS has implemented across Asia Pacific, including Singapore, Japan, mainland China, Vietnam, South Korea, Taiwan, and most recently Hong Kong.

The Philippines has served as a business hub for UPS for over 25 years, connecting businesses to markets in Asia Pacific and beyond. The investments UPS continues to make through this expansion, according to Ramos, will enhance time in transit across Asia Pacific, deliver service reliability for their customers, and position UPS for long-term growth.

Since 2022, UPS has also invested heavily in its Healthcare business. This includes the introduction of UPS Premier in nine markets across the Asia Pacific region, a service that offers priority handling for time- and temperature-sensitive, patient-critical products.

In 2023, UPS added over 22,000 square meters of cold-chain enabled handling, storage and distribution space via new healthcare facilities in Singapore and Australia. An additional 12,000 square meters is being planned for 2024, demonstrating UPS's commitment to its Healthcare business.

LIPAD Chairperson Josephine Gotianun Yap believes that UPS's expansion in Clark will bring beneficial changes to Pampanga, providing job opportunities for the local community and acting as an economic stimulus in the region.

The partnership between UPS and LIPAD also represents a significant milestone in developing Clark as an ideal logistics hub for global brands looking to establish or expand their international operations. Yap looks forward to welcoming UPS to its future location in Clark and supports its expansion in the Philippines.

Construction of the new Clark hub is set to commence in February 2025, and it is anticipated to be operational by late 2026. This development marks an important step in UPS's expansion and investment in the Asia Pacific region.

With a revenue of $91.0 billion in 2023, UPS is one of the world's largest companies. UPS is committed to not only reducing its impact on the environment but also supporting the communities they serve around the world. The company takes an unwavering stance in support of diversity, equity and inclusion, and continues to uphold its purpose statement, "Moving our world forward by delivering what matters."
