Examining the Impacts: Masara Landslide's Toll on Communities and Environment

The evening of February 6, 2024, will forever be etched in the memories of the residents of Zone 1, Barangay Masara, Maco, Davao de Oro. The tranquil routine of the town was disrupted abruptly when a catastrophic landslide struck at 7:30 pm, as reported by the Municipal Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Maco.

Situated just outside the boundaries of the Apex Mining site, the unfortunate area was a regular spot for buses that ferried employees of the mining company. As the earth gave way, the whereabouts of these buses became a concern, casting a shroud of uncertainty and fear over the mining community.

Apex Mining, in a determined bid to trace the dispatched buses and their passengers, partnered with the Office of Representative Ruwel Peter Gonzaga. The office served as the command center, orchestrating a systematic response to the disaster.

Collaborating with the Provincial Governor’s Office, as well as the Maco and Mawab LGUs, Apex Mining initiated rescue operations on multiple fronts. Despite the challenges of limited visibility and intermittent slides, rescue teams worked tirelessly, focusing on taking the injured to hospitals and evacuating affected residents to safer grounds.

The Mawab Gym served as a sanctuary for the affected residents of Mainit, transforming into an emergency evacuation center. The gym buzzed with activity as the evacuated residents found temporary shelter and solace amidst the chaos.

Apex Mining is a publicly listed mining company known by the ticker name APX. It operates the Maco Gold Mine in Maco, Davao de Oro and has fully owned subsidiaries operating mines in Benguet.

Names like Itogon-Suyoc Resources and Monte Oro Resources, Inc., might be familiar to some, as they are the fully owned subsidiaries of APX, managing its various business interests both within the country and abroad.

In February 2023, a significant shift occurred in the mining landscape when APX took over Asia Alliance Mining Resources Corporation (AAMRC), expanding its reach and influence in the industry.

The headquarters of Apex Mining is located at 3304B West Tower, Tektite Towers, Exchange Road, serving as the nerve center of the company's vast operations.

Post the landslide, the town of Masara and its people have shown immense resilience. The recovery process, though challenging, is underway, with the whole community coming together, demonstrating the indomitable spirit of humanity.

The Masara landslide of 2024 will go down in history as a testament to the power of nature and the resilience of humanity. Amidst the rubble and chaos, the community's unity and strength have shone through, lighting the path to recovery and healing.
