A Groundbreaking Step Towards Sustainability

Prime Infra waste unit, marking a significant milestone in Philippine history, recently unveiled the country's first-ever automated Materials Recovery Facility (MRF). This state-of-the-art facility, initiated by Prime Integrated Waste Solutions Inc. (PWS), signifies a monumental leap towards more sustainable and efficient waste management practices in the archipelago.

The inauguration held on Monday, January 29, saw the participation of Director Steve Paradies and President and CEO Guillaume Lucci of Prime Infra, DENR Secretary Ma. Antonia Yulo-Loyzaga, PWS Chair Katrina Razon, and Market Sector Lead for Waste Cara Peralta and Donato Almeda of Prime Infra. An event that will forever be etched in the annals of the nation's environmental progress.

PWS, an entity under the umbrella of Prime Infra, was established to cater to the growing need for proper waste management and resource recovery solutions in the rapidly urbanizing cities of the Philippines.

The MRF in Cebu uses cutting-edge equipment for waste segregation and storage, setting a benchmark in the waste management sector. A first in the country, this initiative is indeed groundbreaking, as pointed out by DENR Secretary Ma. Antonia "Toni" Yulo-Loyzaga.

Secretary Yulo-Loyzaga emphasized the importance of recognizing the solid waste management sector as an industry. The success of the industry hinges on the synergistic efforts of local governance, environmental management, and private investment.

The DENR Secretary also commended PWS for integrating the informal waste picker sector into the process, thereby acknowledging the “social impact of this transition in solid waste management technology”.

PWS Chair Katrina Razon reiterated that the state-of-the-art MRF embodies innovation and the company's commitment to building a regenerative future. She also highlighted the importance of responsible waste management in safeguarding our environment and the well-being of future generations.

The MRF is equipped with advanced machinery sourced from Europe and Asia, including vibrating sieves, baler systems, magnetic separators, and an air density separator. The goal is to maximize resource recovery, thereby avoiding landfill and reducing over 15,000 tons of methane emissions per annum.

As we venture into this new era of waste management, it is essential to remember that everyone has a part to play. Every individual, every organization is a steward for this new way forward in the Philippines.

The inauguration was also graced by other dignitaries, including Cebu City Mayor Mike Rama, Consolacion Mayor Teresa Alegado, Cebu City Councilors, DENR Undersecretary Juan Miguel Cuna, and other key members of Prime Infra.

While the inauguration of the MRF is a significant milestone, there is still much work to be done. PWS’ mission does not end with sorting, segregating, and stacking bales of waste. The ultimate goal is waste value creation, turning waste into sustainable fuels to further reduce methane emissions and provide sustainable fuels to the global market.

PWS is not stopping here. The company is looking forward to expanding operations by developing other facilities across the country, thereby contributing further to proper waste management in the Philippines.

This blog post highlights the inauguration of the Philippines' first automated Materials Recovery Facility by Prime Infra waste unit. The blog discusses the significance of this milestone, the future vision for waste management, and the potential for nationwide expansion.
