In the heart of Atok, Benguet, an innovation taking the form of a rapidly deployable antenna tower stands tall as a beacon of progress. The Resilient Education Information Infrastructure for the New Normal (REIINN) has taken a significant step forward in its quest to build resilient community networks across the country. This progress is the outcome of the diligent work by the DOST Metals Industry Research and Development Center (DOST-MIRDC) and the DOST-Advanced Science and Technology Institute (DOST-ASTI).
This rapidly deployable antenna tower is not merely a structure; it is an embodiment of agility and resilience, capable of being set up swiftly, retracted, and relocated, as the situation demands. This innovation propels our journey towards establishing resilient community networks in a faster, less intrusive manner.
The antenna tower is a technological marvel, yet it also serves as an instrument of empowerment for the community. The decision to retract the antenna during calamities to prevent equipment destruction rests with the community, thus fostering a sense of ownership and decision-making ability in the community network matters.
The antenna tower now graces the premises of Naguey Elementary School. This strategic location expands the benefits of high-speed satellite internet beyond the school grounds, reaching out to the residents of Brgy. Naguey, Atok, Benguet.
Following the antenna's installation, a range test was conducted to ascertain the improvement in coverage. The NTC Fixed and Mobile Broadband Benchmarking System (NetMesh), a network speed test app developed by DOST-ASTI, was employed for this purpose.
In parallel with the technical advancements, a significant effort was made to engage the locals and leaders of the community. A series of training sessions were conducted educating them about the erection and retraction of the tower. The locals were then given the opportunity to put their learnings into practice, erecting and retracting the tower independently.
The success of the tower installation stands as a testament to the agency's unwavering commitment to bridging the digital divide. This commitment extends particularly to Geographically Isolated and Disadvantaged Areas in the country, where this initiative can provide the most significant impact.
