Fighting the Digital Demons: A Call for Collaboration for a Safer Internet

SOURCE: PLDT

In a world where technology is becoming increasingly ubiquitous, the internet has become a playground for both the bright and the dark aspects of human nature. This dichotomy has led to a significant increase in online sexual abuse and exploitation of children (OSAEC) and the distribution of child sexual abuse and exploitation materials (CSAEM).

Leading the charge against these digital demons is the integrated telco network PLDT alongside its wireless arm, Smart Communications. Through their continuous efforts, they strive to create a safer internet environment for all users, especially children, against the threats of OSAEC and CSAEM.

At the recent Safer Internet Day event, PLDT and Smart urged a closer collaboration between the government, industry stakeholders, and the public to combat these digital threats. This call to arms is in line with Republic Act no 11930, the Anti-OSAEC and CSAEM Act which aims to protect children from such online atrocities.

One significant focus of the discussion was the role of Artificial Intelligence (AI) in shaping a safer internet. With AI being a double-edged sword, PLDT and Smart emphasize on harnessing the positive aspects of this powerful technology, while also addressing its threats and risks.

As part of their broader initiative, PLDT has invested in a pioneering Child Protection Platform, which blocks CSAEM at the content level. This platform, as of 2023, has blocked 1.5 billion access attempts to CSAEM, showcasing a significant milestone in their efforts.

PLDT has actively engaged local government units to assist them in crafting their own internet safety ordinances. This grassroots approach aims to safeguard the most vulnerable sectors of society from OSAEC and CSAEM-related issues.

The PLDT Group also believes in empowering its workforce by training them to become more aware of OSAEC and CSAEM-related issues. This internal initiative is seen as a critical step in their comprehensive approach to combat online sexual abuse.

According to Wo Rosete, AVP for Stakeholder Management, there is a need for a conversation around AI and its implications. This includes policy reviews that would allow government and stakeholders to study not only generative AI but also AI-backed cyber attacks that target personal data.

PLDT's initiatives align with the UN Sustainable Development Goal No. 16, which calls for an end to abuse, exploitation, trafficking, and all forms of violence against and torture of children. This reflects their long-term commitment to creating just, peaceful, and inclusive societies.

For their significant contribution in the fight against OSAEC and human trafficking, the national office of the Inter-Agency Council Against Trafficking (IACAT) cited PLDT and Smart for their anti-OSAEC efforts last year, a fitting testament to their commendable efforts.
